PG&E Employees Help Seniors at Stockton Food Pantry
On Thursday, June 16, 2011, PG&E presented a $25,000 check on to help the Second Harvest Food Bank of San Joaquin & Stanislaus Counties as lead sponsor of the Senior Brown Bag Food Program. PG&E’s donation will provide ongoing support of the food program and supplemental groceries for more than 2,900 senior citizens in San Joaquin County who might be struggling to make ends meet, the Stockton Record reported. PG&E will also give the food bank more than 3,000 reusable brown bags. “Supporting Second Harvest Food Bank Senior Brown Bag Food Program is one way that we can help our senior citizens adjust to the increasing cost of living and ensure they are aware of the many financial assistance programs that are available to them,” said Cynthia Pollard, Central Valley government relations manager.
The Senior Brown Bag Food Program event was held at the Arnold Rue Community Center in Stockton, where PG&E volunteers filled grocery bags and provided information and applications to our customers for our financial assistance programs.
Second Harvest Food Bank helps more than 35,000 people in need in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties, partnering with more than 200 nonprofit agencies and community centers to distribute 1 million pounds of food each month.
“The PG&E volunteers really made some great connections with our local seniors,” said Anna Brooks, an Energy Services and Solutions account manager who helped organize the event. “The seniors were so appreciative of the donations, and it was wonderful to see such a good turnout for the event. More than 20 people showed up from many different lines of business in the Stockton area, and many brought family members to help. It’s so important that we’re out there in the community and making a difference for our customers in need.”
WALMART GOES ABOVE & BEYOND TO HELP LOCAL FOOD BANK
Second Harvest Food Bank has been incredibly blessed by the generosity and support of Walmart in recent years and especially over the past six months. In November, Walmart awarded Second Harvest Food Bank of San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties a 24 foot refrigerated truck valued at $85,000. The truck was a true godsend for the food bank due to the increased need for store pick-ups and increased deliveries to the Senior Brown Bag and Food 4 Thought programs. In addition to the truck, our Food Bank received a $25,000 grant for general food purchases and $20,000 for our Food 4 Thought program.
The help didn’t stop there! By partnering with the Super Walmart store in Modesto, managed by board member Paul Shumate, we were able to purchase over 2,000 turkeys at a price that was truly unbeatable. The money we saved allowed us to purchase additional product that we would not otherwise have been able to provide. In total, we were able to assist over 8,000 families this Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday, providing a turkey or ham along with other items to give them a traditional meal they would not have had otherwise.
Mr. Shumate continues to show his commitment as a board member by going the extra mile. Under his guidance, the Walmart stores in the Central Valley have also supported the food bank by providing over 70 volunteers to sort and label canned food items to be used for our vital programs. This not only helped the Food Bank with extra hands, but provided us with the opportunity to share our mission with the employees and show them the impact the company they represent is having in their community.
As you can see through generous donations, grants, a valuable partnership, and the gift of time Walmart continues to show its commitment to Second Harvest Food Bank and our mission of Fighting Hunger and Feeding Hope. Thank you Walmart for your continued support and helping ease the pain that hunger brings.
