Food Assistance
Second Harvest Food Bank currently serves over 325,000 people a year throughout 7 counties including; San Joaquin County, Stanislaus County and the Mother Lode. Through our collaboration with approximately 190 non-profit agencies we are able to distribute over 12 million pounds of supplemental groceries to families and individuals suffering from food insecurity. In our mission to ease the pain that hunger brings,Second Harvest Food Bank strives to provide nutritional essentials, including protein and fresh produce and is committed to providing an efficient, cost effective system for collecting and distributing food in the Central Valley.
Food 4 Thought
The Food 4 Thought Program provides supplemental groceries to over 3,800 children at 40 sites throughout San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties. Students who participate in 8 hours of an academically based after school program receive a 15-18 pound bag of food, twice per month. These bags contain nutritional staples for growing kids; such as whole grains, protein, and fresh produce. This program has been going strong for 14 years and is continuing to grow and expand. Second Harvest Food Bank is committed to breaking the cycle of hunger in youth, and strives to feed the bodies and minds of the children in our communities.
Senior Brown Bag
The Senior Brown Bag program provides supplemental groceries to over 2,900 senior citizens at 24 sites in San Joaquin County. Many seniors are living on a fixed income, finding it difficult to adjust to the ever increasing cost of living and are struggling to make ends meet. The seniors in this program receive a 15-18 pound bag of food, twice per month. These bags contain nutritional essentials and a generous portion of fresh produce. This program has been going strong for 30 years; making a difference in the lives of our seniors and striving to keep them healthy and happy.
Farm to Family
Second Harvest Food Bank participates in the Farm to Family Program to provide the individuals and families we serve with access to fresh produce. Many times receiving food assistance means sacrificing nutrition due to the distribution of shelf stable or non perishable items that don't contain the same nutrition value as fresh foods. The Farm to Family Program was developed by the California Association of Food Banks to help fill this nutritional void; forming partnerships between local growers and Food Banks across California.Through these partnerships Food Banks have access to over 110 million pounds of fresh, quality produce.
