Feeding the Bodies and Minds of Children
Our Food 4 Thought program takes an innovative approach that addresses the nutrition and educational needs of hungry school children. By offering children in need an incentive to improve and excel both physically and actively while meeting their most basic need, we are taking away the negative stigma associated with food assistance in schools. Our program reaches out to existing tutorial programs at schools and youth sites.
Children that participate in the required four hours per week in tutoring and four hours of physical activity are provided a bag of 15-18 pounds of supplemental groceries, including 7-9 pounds of fresh produce. The after-school programs incorporate tutoring, enrichment, and fitness goals to promote healthy outcomes while building self-esteem. Currently, Second Harvest serves over 3,800 children at 37 sites in San Joaquin and Stanislaus County.
